Hotline offers free advice to new mothers

ATLANTA, Ga. -

A new, free-of-charge service gets you the answers you need to have stress-free pregnancy. The program is a service of the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities and Emory University.

For mothers like Nadia Ali, it is a great resource instead of the internet: "My husband Googles it but I don't like to do that because there's a lot on the internet that's not accurate and I don't know which is which" Ali says.  

Accurate information is important to Nadia right now, because she's 5 months pregnant.

"I had all kinds of questions because people were telling me all kinds of different things like you can't eat sushi, you can't eat soft cheese and don't get highlights in your hair or anything" Ali explained. 

Thanks to the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities and Emory University, mothers to be have someone to call to get answers to burning questions.

If you call the toll free number, Patrica Olney with 'Mother To Baby Georgia' answers the phone. She'll answer any questions you have, completely free of charge.

"There are some real common questions anything from hair dye during pregnancy, hair permanence, eating sushi to something more serious like consumption of alcohol, prescription medications, over the counter medications" Olney explains. 

The answers you receive, officials say, is sound, research-based information. The goal is to prevent birth defects like fetal alcohol syndrome.

"We don't replace the advice or the care that a physician provides, we feel like we empower the couple with information that's reliable - that they can actually use to benefit a healthy pregnancy" Olney adds. 

Patricia says the most common question she gets on the mother to baby hotline: many mothers want to know about the effects of smoking on baby.
