Festival to celebrate Georgia's musical heritage

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTA (AP) - The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the Georgia Humanities Council are teaming up for a festival celebrating Georgia's musical heritage.

The Georgia Roots Music Festival is scheduled for Jan. 18 at the Woodruff Arts Center. The free, one-day event will include concerts, discussions, exhibits and opportunities to meet and perform with festival artists.

Different styles of music will be featured, including gospel, string band, bluegrass, country, blues, R&B, folk, immigrant music, and more.

The event is presented in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution and University of West Georgia Center for Public History.

It will mark the culmination of an 18-month tour of the Smithsonian Institution's traveling exhibition, New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music. It includes displays and interactive exhibits that explore the early traditions of American music.
