Bill would give TSA-collected change to military groups

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

The Transportation Security Administration is cashing in on the loose change air travelers are leaving at airport security checkpoints.

The coins add up: the TSA collected $465,000 in unclaimed money in the last two years.

U.S. Rep. Lynn Westmoreland (R-Georgia) is co-sponsoring a bill that would require the TSA to transfer collected money to nonprofit organizations like the USO. That organization provides a host of services to the nation's military service members and their families.

The USO Lounge at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport allows military families to enjoy the comforts of home during layovers.

"There's a lot of things that they do provide," said Bambi Watson, a military wife. "Things as far as helping with groceries, helping with families in need other times of the year. There are a lot of families who don't have the ability to go to the store and buy what they need for their kids, especially with our service members that's so important. They are out fighting for our freedoms and their families don't have what they need back home."

If Rep. Westmoreland's bill doesn't pass, travelers told FOX 5 that they believe the government should make good use of the windfall.

"Actually put that money back in the government pool and stop taking less from the taxpayers I'm all in favor of that."

The U.S. House passed the bill on Tuesday. It now awaits the Senate's approval.
