Residents seeking heating assistance turned away

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Residents in need of help to pay for their heating spent hours in line only to be turned away on Monday.

Lines were heavy at the Partnership for Action on Covington Highway. People anticipated checks of more than $300 as part of a one-time heating assistance payment.

Some stood in the rain beginning in the wee hours of the morning to beat the rush when they were told the funds had not arrived.

They were turned away because, according to officials, Congress did not release funds for the program before going on vacation last week.

Participants were given numbers and other resources to call if they needed immediate assistance, but that was not enough to satisfy some of those who were turned away.

The program is available to those living in DeKalb, Rockdale, Gwinnett, Newton and Walton counties. Payment range from $310 to $350.

Officials have asked participants to stay vigilant and continue calling their offices until the funds arrive. They also say they are working to get the funds as soon as possible.
