Morning-after pill may not work for heavier women

Posted: Updated:

The Food and Drug Administration is looking into whether the so-called "morning-after" contraceptive pills fail to work in women who weigh a lot and whether to require the emergency contraceptive pill makers to add a warning label to the packaging.

In Europe, French drug maker HRA has been ordered to put a warning on its packaging that the drug loses effectiveness based on a woman's weight.

The FDA is "currently reviewing the available and related scientific information on this issue, including the publication upon which the Norlevo labeling change was based," FDA spokeswoman Erica Jefferson said via email. "The agency will then determine what, if any, labeling changes to approved emergency contraceptives are warranted."

Scientists reported the pill could lose effectiveness in women who weigh more than 165 pounds and not be effective at all in women who weight more than 176 pounds, according to several media reports.

Norlevo is similar to morning-after contraceptives sold in the United States under the brand name Plan B One Step and in generic versions under other names. Plan B is sold by Israel-based Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd.
