MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

Minneapolis police are looking for tips leading to a suspect who allegedly posed as a badged official in connection with the sexual assault of a University of Minnesota student.

On Sunday, the University of Minnesota issued a crime alert telling students a woman was sexually assaulted by a man wearing a badge who offered her a ride home at about 2:15 a.m.

Commander Bruce Folkens of the Special Crimes Investigation Division held a news conference Monday to discuss details of the incident and what a person should do if he or she is approached by someone posing as a cop.

Just a few hours after the press conference, the Fridley Police Department announced that it is also searching for a suspect wanted in a similar crime that was committed roughly 12 hours before the student's assault.

According to police, the student was walking near the intersection of 15th Avenue SE and 8th Street SE when the suspect approached her in a black SUV and slowed to talk to her.

Minneapolis police said the suspect looked like a police officer or private security, but did not identify himself as such. The victim thought he was an official of some sort as he was wearing a badge.

SUSPECT DETAILS

The suspect in the case is described as a black man between the ages of 23 an 27 years old with a medium build. He is hair was either short or shaven, and he had a neatly trimmed chin-strap style beard, according to police.

The clothes he was wearing at the time of the assault are described as a dark jacket with a badge on it, dark pants and a security- or police-style duty belt.

The suspect's vehicle was described as a dark SUV with a dark interior and a computer screen in the center console.

TIPS?

Minneapolis police are investigating the crime, and anyone with information is asked to call 612-692-8477 and reference case number MP-13-391636. You can also submit an anonymous text message using the department's Tip 411 app -- it's free for iPhone and Android devices and available in the App Store and Google Play.

HOW TO CONFIRM A COP'S IDENTITY

Both the Minneapolis Police Department and the Anoka County Sheriff's Office stress that anyone who wishes to confirm an officer's identity can do so at any time by calling 911 and asking a dispatcher to do one or both of the following:

- Verify the officer's identity immediately over the phone
- Ask dispatch to send a uniformed officer

Any real police officer will identify the name of the law enforcement agency they work for and will carry both a badge and identification credentials. Members of the public may ask to see those credentials at any time, regardless of whether the officer is in plain clothes or an unmarked vehicle.
