Local Rhodes Scholarship winners

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - Three local college students are among 32 Americans awarded the Rhodes Scholarship.

The winners are allowed to study at Oxford University in England for two years, free of charge.

Paolo Singer from the Bronx, Isabel Bsehar from Westchester County and Alexander Diaz from North Bergen, NJ were among the winners.

"To be honest everyone that was a finalist is extremely qualified. It (my selection) may have been for my undying passion for my community. This process started last year," said Diaz.

Singer is studying economics at Harvard University; Beshar is studying biology at Yale University and Diaz is majoring in psychology at Harvard.

The Rhodes Scholarship was created in 1902 by British philanthropist Cecil Rhodes.

Winners are selected on the basis of high academic achievement, personal integrity, leadership potential, and physical vigor, among other attributes.

Former President Bill Clinton was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship.

Kent Brantly always wanted to be a medical missionary, and he took the work seriously, spending months treating a steady stream of patients with Ebola in Liberia. Now Brantly is himself a patient, fighting for his own survival in an isolation unit on the outskirts of Monrovia, Liberia, after contracting the deadly disease. The Texas-trained doctor says he is "terrified" of the disease progressing further.
