Garden State Plaza Mall security video shows gunman

Posted: Updated:
NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

Security camera video from November 4, 2013 at the Garden State Plaza Mall in Paramus has been released. You can see people running from Richard Shoop, 20, who was walking around the mall dressed in black and armed with a Sig Sauer rifle made to look like an AK-47 assault rifle. He had stolen the weapon from his brother earlier in the day.

Shoop, who had a history of drug abuse, is calmly walking around, strolling really even after he fired shots into the air.

We showed the video to Manuel Gomez, a former FBI agent and former New York City police officer. He said Shoop was not walking around in a tactical position like he wanted to take out targets or defend himself.

It takes a while before police show up, which may explain why Shoop killed himself. He may have been hoping that the cops would kill him, but he may have decided not to wait.

The Justice Department is contacting a number of malls asking them to increase security for the upcoming holidays.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is holding its monthly board meeting, two days after it heard from a panel on what it needs to do to improve its accountability and efficiency and restore public trust.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey could rescind a $1-a-year lease for a park-and-ride lot near the Lincoln Tunnel. The agency's chief of real estate and development told a committee Wednesday that it should change a deal made in 2012. Published reports have alleged that former Port Authority chairman David Samson voted to approve the lease even though his law firm did business with New Jersey Transit, which operates the park-and-ride lot.
