Steve Harvey: Man of Faith

Posted: Updated:

Everyone has a little something special tucked away deep inside.

If we search hard enough; long enough we all can find that special spark that could leave any mouth agape.

When I walked into the station's fifth floor conference room to interview funnyman, talk-show host and author Steve Harvey, I knew he had a little extra "something special" to give.  Harvey openly and warmly embraces his most notable role as comedian.  So, I figured our time together would be chock-full of belly laughs.

Not the case at all.  It took just one question to turn his theater mask smile into the more serious version.
"What role does faith play in your life?" I asked.
Harvey was wide-eyed and suddenly stoic. I knew, what followed, would be no laughing matter.
"The faith part is the core. It is how I got here today," Harvey lamented.

In this special and guarded space, Harvey would recall how his mother played a key role in teaching him about their God and their faith.  He would recount a pretty tumultuous season where the laughs grew to a crescendo while the intensity of fame masked his pain.
Harvey talked about embracing what he calls his "re-birth" and how it molded the man he is today-- Funny Man; Man of Faith.

After the interview, I made a point to watch Harvey on TV.  I honed in on his hilarity. Then, I looked beyond the pin-striped suit and jolly facade and remembered him repeating, "Faith is the evidence of things not seen."
