2 city workers fail alcohol test days after fatal crash

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Two Atlanta Department of Public Works employees failed an alcohol test held days after a sanitation worker was killed in a crash, FOX 5 has learned.

The fatal accident happened Saturday afternoon on Interstate 75. A passenger died after being thrown from the garbage truck, while the driver was critically injured. Sources tell FOX 5 that a bottle of vodka was found inside the cab of the truck.

According to the police report, the driver of the truck nearly missed his exit and quickly jerked the steering wheel, but overcorrected and the truck flipped.

FOX 5 has reported that the driver had a blood-alcohol level three times over the legal limit after the accident.

In response to the accident, lab workers caught city workers by surprise early Friday morning at the Lakewood sanitation yard. Two workers reportedly failed the alcohol test.

Gina Pagnotta-Murphy, president of the Professional Association of City Employees (PACE Atlanta), said it's been a difficult week for workers.

"Employees on both sides…got to understand this has got to stop," said Pagnotta-Murphy "On the other hand, I'm requesting and then demanding that the city take a more proactive way and get to the root of this…They are afraid that if they let someone know they will have a problem, they will be terminated without getting the help they need."

A spokesperson from Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed's office said that the city has an assistance program, but workers must ask for that help before they get caught.
