Queens teacher sentenced in sexual abuse case

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - A former New York City public school teacher has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for sexually assaulting five students over a three-year period.

Queens Supreme Court Justice Michael D. Aloise announced the prison term for Simon Watts on Wednesday.

Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said the 42-year-old third- and fourth-grade teacher was convicted in June of multiple sexual abuse, forcible touching and other charges.

A lawyer for Watts didn't immediately return a call for comment.

Brown said all the incidents took place at the Queens school - and some even during class time. He said the victims were four girls and a boy, all between eight and 10 years old.

Brown said the abuse occurred between September 2007 and March 2010.
