Neil Rackers: Texans not ready to make a move at kicker

Posted: Updated:

While the Houston Texans gave a tryout on Tuesday to three free agent kickers, one of the players involved, former Texans kicker Neil Rackers said the club is not ready to make a move.

With kicker Randy Bullock having his problems, the Texans took a look at Rackers, Shayne Graham, also a former Texans kicker, and Justin Medlock.

"We all hit the ball really well, but they told us they were not ready to make a move at this point," Rackers said in an interview with FOX 26 Sports.

Rackers, a 12-year veteran, kicked for the Texans in 2010 and 2011 before signing with the Washington Redskins as a free agent.

The Redskins cut him prior to last season.

Rackers tied former Texans kicker Kris Brown for the most points scored in a season in team history in 2010 with 124 and then set what was the club record the following year with 135 points.

He kicked a career-best 57-yard field goal against the Denver Broncos in 2010.

Graham, a 13-year veteran, was the Texans kicker in 2012 after Bullock suffered a season-ending injury during training camp.

Graham connected on 31 of 38 field goals for the Texans during the regular season en route to setting the club record for points scored in a season with 138, three better than Rackers.

Graham had a career long  of 55 yards in the playoff loss to the New England Patriots.

He was waived by the Pittsburgh Steelers in September.

"I feel like we all did well," Graham said in a text message to FOX 26 Sports on Wednesday. "I was very happy with my field goal performance.

"(The Texans) just said they were staying with what they have for now. Randy is a friend and I wish him well.

"I am also in training in Houston full time and ready for any opportunity that may come my way."

Medlock was released by the Oakland Raiders in training camp.

He kicked for the Carolina Panthers last season.

Medlock has been with 11 different teams since 2007, including five teams in the NFL and six in the Canadian Football league.

Bullock, who is from Klein High School and Texas A&M, has missed eight field goals (13-21) this season, including three (49, 43, 55) in the 27-24 loss to the Indianapolis Colts Sunday night.
