Should Hollywood immortalize 2013 Gopher season?

Posted: Updated:

The Minnesota Vikings may have a tough time on the field these days, but things couldn't be better for the Golden Gophers, who knocked off the Nebraska Cornhuskers for the first time in over half a century on Saturday.

The Huskers are heavyweights in college football, ranking in the top 25 -- but the Gophers' 6-2 record has already made them eligible for a bowl game. In fact, the turnaround the team has achieved since their head coach took a leave of absence has many wondering whether Hollywood is paying attention to what they believe could be the next feel-good movie of the season.

After years of heartbreak, Saturday's win over the Cornhuskers didn't just defy the odds, it also has Gopher fans feeling optimistic about the challenging schedule ahead.

Although many worried head coach Jerry Kill's seizures would derail the season, the team seems that much more motivated to overcome the odds instead.

"In my mind, it's the determination of the Gophers to not step down when so many other people have counted them out," Grant Anderson said.

When asked whether this season could be fit for the silver screen, Anderson -- an aspiring Minnesota screenwriter -- said it already has all the elements of a compelling storyline.

"It writes itself," he joked.

On the road to victory, comes a story of redemption. With a coach sidelined by illness and the team's reputation on the line, a team topples top contenders because there can be only one champion.

"Every film has a formula," Anderson continued. "The way the season has been going for the Gophers, this season fits right into that formula."

From the Big 10 school that brought the world Herb Brooks and the honeycrisp apple comes the 2013 Gopher football season -- a team so determined to win, you can take it to The Bank.

While others, not wanting to jinx anything, say it's still too soon to sell any movie rights, Anderson said the beauty of the story is the real-life drama.

"It's a story that we can't turn our eyes away from, and the best about it is it's a live movie," he said. "Week to week, it's the next chapter. It's the next scene."

The Gophers are now set to take on the Indiana Hoosiers at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington on Saturday.
