Tyrone Artis the father of the three young children ages 4 months, 2 and 5 that were killed in an apartment fire Friday night says he is taking things 'one day at a time.'

He was hugged by neighbors who said Artis is 'in shock.'

Valerie Frazier was waiting to be let back in the building under a Red Cross blanket. Frazier, a fifth floor tenant who used the fire escape to flee the blaze  said she saw the children lying on the ground. "We lost three babies," she said. "No one should have to see what we saw."

The children's mother and two other children, ages 4 months and 4 years old made it out alive. The fire marshal confirmed the fire was chased by candles in the kitchen. Frazier said "Con-ed had cut her off on Thursday. She bought the candles yesterday to see."

The FDNY set up a comfort station outside the building but one tenent said "They are not directing us where to go. People are homeless. I just have my stuff in a bag and I'm wandering around."

During a press conference, FDNY Deputy Assistant Chief Jack Mooney said even though there were candles in the apartment and that they may be responsible causing the blaze, the fire is still under investigation "This is an ongoing investigation. It appears the candles may have been the cause. The mother awoke to smoke, she escaped through the fire escape with two children,"  Mooney says.

Mooney says the mother is in serious yet stable condition while the children are also in serious yet stable condition.

Fire officials say Friday night's fire started in a second-floor apartment of a six-story building just blocks from Yankee Stadium. Five-year-old Elijah Artis, 2-year-old Jeremiah Artis and 4-month-old Michael Turner were pronounced dead at a hospital.

The U.S. Open is underway in Queens and there's no denying that many of the players, both men and women, are in great physical shape and know how to play that up. Women are particularly promoted in the industry as attractive, fashionable and fiercely competitive. Does that help the game and draw more people in?
