"She was the reason I smiled every day. She was just wonderful."
That's what made this ordeal so hard for Camilo Zermeno to bear. He was trying to grieve for his wife and raise seven children as a single dad while under a cloud of suspicion.
"It's not the nicest feeling in the world. It's even better to prove them wrong."
It was New Year's Eve in 2011.. Camilo and his wife Edlyn were had an argument at this club.. He left.. Five minutes later she did the same.. but only Camilo made it home. A passerby found Edyln's body dumped along a bayou just yards from a fire station.
For a while there things looked bad for Camilo and he's quick to admit it. I mean after all he had a public fight with his wife, they leave separately and she turns up dead. Most of the time, yeah, it would be the husband who was the killer. most of the time. Just not this time.
"When they picked me up they picked me up thinking it was me. I used to be one of those people who points fingers watching the news all the time pointing the finger. That's not nice. That hurt me a lot."
The case went cold. Police even put up a highway sign at the scene asking for help. Then in January they arrested 27 year old Francisco Lopez.. Who was the suspect in a rape case as well. Camilo says Lopez goes to trial next week. He plans to be there for as much of it as he can but it's not easy. He has obligations. Five big one right now, the five children still living with him.. He says Lopez is looking at 25 years and that's not enough..
"12 years from now would you like this guy lurking around your daughter? 12 years from now? "
He says his desire for justice and his love for his kids keep him going.. keep him moving forward.. It's easier to look forward than backwards.. backwards is still so painful. especially that argument on news years eve.
"I wish I had a time machine bro. If I knew then what I know now. I would. I mean." he said as his voice trailed off.
