NEW YORK (AP) - Facing a massive deficit in the polls, Joe Lhota plans to be on the attack in the second New York City mayoral debate.

Lhota will square off with Democrat Bill de Blasio Tuesday night and will immediately suggest that de Blasio is not experienced enough to lead the city. Lhota will also say that a Democratic victory would return New York to its crime-filled past.

De Blasio, the city's public advocate, surprised Lhota, a Republican and one-time deputy mayor to Rudolph Giuliani, by abandoning his play-it-safe strategy in their first debate last week to relentlessly criticize Lhota.

Lhota has been down by more than 40 points in every poll taken since the primary.

The candidates will meet a third and final time Oct. 29. The general election is Nov. 5.
