Douglasville residents demand ethics probe of councilman

Posted: Updated:
DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. -

A Douglasville city councilman who let loose on social media found himself under fire Monday night.

Councilman Dennis McLain faces an ethics complaint from residents outraged over his comments posted on social media outlets.

A group of Douglasville residents filed the ethics complaint, calling McLain's posts "inappropriate - inflammatory - and racially charged."

At Monday's city council meeting, the attorney representing the upset residents pushed for a hearing before a city ethics board.

Attorney William Boddie said, "The African-American community was disrespected here, gays and lesbians disrespected here."

The ethics complaint argues - McLain "offended those in his district" and "embarrassed the city of Douglasville."

In reference to Tiger Woods, McLain posted, "So TIGER doesn't like fried chicken? Haha."

In response to an article about a Boy Scout event, McLain posted "Gotta make room for the perverts. Can straight Scoutmasters attend?"

Other posts included comments on President Barack Obama and current fashion trends.

Resident David Good said, "It's all about being held accountable, especially as an elected official".

Another Douglasville resident, Ashlyn Sellers, said, "I think he (McLain) should apologize."

In September, McLain did apologize for his Facebook posts.

In response to criticism, McLain told the Douglas County Sentinel, "I'm truly sorry. I know I've hurt a lot of people that I wouldn't have hurt for anything in the world and I hope that they will still be my friend. Just know that you can tear down a lot in five minutes that you took 70 years to build."

FOX 5's Kaitlyn Pratt tried to talk to the councilman after the meeting about his social media remarks after Monday's meeting, but he ignored her.

The election for McLain's Ward 2 council seat is in two weeks.

The residents who filed the complaint say it's not politically motivated, and they would have moved forward with it whether it was an election year or not.
