A state agency is set to vote to buy the rights to the New Haven Open, effectively saving the annual tennis tournament and preventing it from leaving Connecticut, Gov. Dan Malloy announced Thursday.

The Capital Region Development Authority will vote on October 17, 2013, on buying the rights. That would effectively make the authority the owner of the women-only hardcourt tournament.

"This tournament has created both economic and community development opportunities in the City of New Haven for 16 years," Malloy said in a statement. "We know that Connecticut is a great state for women's sports, and this is another fantastic way to ensure that continues to be the case in 2014 and beyond."

The tournament, which is part of the U.S. Open Series, will be held August 15 through 23, 2014, at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale in New Haven.

The authoity said it has "firm commitments" from the tournament's major sponsors, Aetna, American Express, First Niagara, Yale, and Yale-New Haven Hospital.
