NYC mayoral hopefuls use very different strategies

By The Associated Press - NEW YORK (AP) - With just a month to go until voters choose the successor to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the two leading candidates have adopted decidedly different campaign strategies.

Democratic nominee Bill de Blasio (dih BLAH'-zee-oh) enjoys a comfortable lead in the polls and seems content to run out the clock to Election Day. He has dramatically scaled back his public campaign events.

His Republican rival, Joe Lhota, has chosen in recent weeks not to play up his managerial experience as the city heads toward a fiscal crisis. Rather, the former city budget director has attacked de Blasio for a trip he made to Nicaragua in the 1980s to support the left-wing Sandinistas.

Pundits are split on the tactics, with one calling it "an unusual campaign."
