New Common Core standards challenge kids -- and their parents

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Long Island City public school fourth grader Glen Masala's math homework is more challenging than ever. Glen is being asked to learn math and English differently. New York and 44 other states have adopted a new curriculum called Common Core.

"First grade and second grade we learned easy multiplication facts now we have to know them quick and we are learning how to add very high numbers like in the hundreds thousands place," Glen says.

Before Common Core every state had its own version of math or English standards. So politicians and educators have come up with a uniform set of standards for reading, writing and mathematics to use nationwide.

The idea is to teach kids to become critical thinkers so they can be better prepared for college or the workplace.

Tutors at Bright Kids say they have been overwhelmed with parents wanting help figuring out homework and dreading Common Core tests. The learning agency is now thinking about adding weekend tutorials just for parents.
