NEW YORK (AP) - The Federal Emergency Management Agency is giving victims of Superstorm Sandy a six-month extension to file critical paperwork for insurance payments.

FEMA announced the decision Tuesday, even after the federal government shutdown amid budget wars in Congress. It allows victims more time to submit an inventory of things they believe should be covered in any insurance settlement. FEMA had given homeowners until the storm's anniversary.

Benjamin Rajotte, director of the Disaster Relief Clinic at the Touro Law Center on Long Island, said the extension will bring relief to thousands of homeowners in New York and New Jersey who are still fighting for a bigger flood insurance payment.

He said many were unaware of the deadline, and many more were unprepared to finish documenting their insurance claims by the storm's anniversary.

The criminal courthouse isn't located too far from the Texas Medical Center but the details coming from the courtroom about Dr. Ana Gonzalez describe a woman who is a world away from being a respected MD Anderson oncologist.
