Atlanta to mark National Public Lands Day

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTA (AP) - U.S. Interior Secretary Sally Jewell will be among those expected in Atlanta to mark the 20th annual National Public Lands Day.

Jewell and EPA Deputy Administrator Bob Perciasepe are slated to join hundreds of volunteers Saturday at the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site.

Officials say National Public Lands Day is the largest, single-day volunteer effort on behalf of parks and other public lands. This year, more than 180,000 volunteers are expected to volunteer at nearly 2,200 sites across the country.

Those in Atlanta will be pulling weeds at the "I Have a Dream" International World Peace Rose Garden, removing invasive plants at Freedom Park and cleaning the interior of Ebenezer Baptist Church.
