Superior Plumbing owner's dog home after being missing for weeks

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

One of the most famous lost dogs in Atlanta history is home after being missing for more than two weeks.

Jay Cunningham, the owner of Superior Plumbing -- known to many as "the honest plumber" on radio and TV ads – spared no expense to find his dog, Petey.  The 4-year-old Pit Bull mix jumped out of Cunningham's RV at a charity event at Turner Field on Sept. 1 and disappeared.

Cunningham passed out fliers, organized search parties and even put up a billboard to help find his dog.

The distraught owner camped out in his pickup truck with his son night after night in southeast Atlanta in hopes of finding Petey.

The search ended last Friday night after Cunningham received word that Petey had been hit by a car on Moreland Avenue by the Starlight Drive-In movie theatre.

Petey suffered a broken pelvis and several other smaller injuries, but he is expected to make a full recovery.

Cunningham is known for his charity work; the Superior Plumbing box at Turner Field is dedicated to special needs children who get free tickets. He said that when he needed the gift of prayer, Atlanta's residents stepped up.

"It really brought the community together to find an animal and it tells you something about all the good people here in Atlanta," Cunningham said.

Petey's story has helped generate interest in several organizations that help find lost animals.
