NY man jumps from moving car, leaves boy inside

Posted: Updated:

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Police in Syracuse say a man who fled officers during a traffic stop jumped out of his moving car, leaving behind his 8-year-old stepson inside the vehicle.

Officials tell local media outlets that two officers stopped the man's car around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday for a traffic violation. When the officers approached the car, the driver sped off.

The officers followed the vehicle for several blocks before the driver jumped out while the car was still moving, then fled on foot. The man was caught after a brief foot chase.

When the officers went back to his car, they found his stepson inside. The boy wasn't injured. He was released to his mother.

The charges against the driver include drug possession, endangering the welfare of a child and resisting arrest.
