Foxwoods to break ground on outlet center

MASHANTUCKET, Conn. (AP) - More than a year after it was announced, an upscale outlet center at Foxwoods Resort Casino is about to be built.

Foxwoods and Tanger Outlets are set to break ground on Tanger Outlets at Foxwoods on Thursday.

Tanger Factory Outlet Centers Inc. in Greensboro, N.C., and Gordon Group in Greenwich announced the agreement in June 2012.

Last June, neighboring Mohegan Sun announced plans for a $50 million retail project.

The two Indian-run casinos are competing for separate Massachusetts gambling licenses as they seek to generate more revenue. Slot revenue has been falling at Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun as the casinos face tough competition in the Northeast and the weak economic recovery cutting into consumer spending.

The retail businesses are intended to add to gambling as an attraction or bring in shoppers who don't gamble.

    A Stonington man has been charged with cruelty to animals after police say he shot his girlfriend's pet turtle. Steven Richard, 31, reportedly used a BB gun to shoot the turtle in the head Friday night outside a home on Pawtucket Avenue. Police responded to the home just after 8 p.m. when a neighbor reported an argument between Richard and the woman who lives there.
