House chairman: Ga. port hurdle should get lifted

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - The chairman of a U.S. House committee pushing a bill that would clear a final obstacle to deepening the Savannah harbor says he believes the measure will pass Congress by the end of this year.

Rep. Bill Shuster of Pennsylvania, chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, visited the Port of Savannah on Wednesday and said the full House should vote on the water-projects bill containing critical language for the port during the second week of October. If the measure passes, the House and Senate must work out differences between their versions of the bill.

The Army Corps of Engineers is ready to begin a $652 million deepening of the Savannah port's shipping channel. But Congress must remove a $459 million spending cap placed on the project in 1999.
