TREVINO TRIAL: Jury selected; Question No. 43 critical

Posted: Updated:
ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

After three days, jury selection for the murder trial of Jeffery Trevino wrapped up on Wednesday afternoon, setting the stage for opening arguments to begin on Thursday morning.

Lawyers and the judge questioned 47 people after 54 participated in an 11-page questionnaire on Monday. After one-on-one interviews, the pool was whittled down to 14 jurors, including two alternates. The final juror, a woman who spends her winters in Florida, was selected at about 4:30 p.m.

The makeup of the jury is diverse, comprised of eight men and six women of varying ages and races.

The jury will be sequestered as they deliberate whether or not Jeffery Trevino, the St. Paul man accused of murdering his wife, Kira, last February, is guilty or innocent of the second-degree murder charge he faces.

WHO'S ON THE JURY?

Below are descriptions of the 14 jurors selected to hear the case. They include:

- A woman who recently graduated from college and works locally as a nanny

- A woman who left a long career in software development

- A woman who is a self-employed health care consultant and is married to an attorney

- A man who serves as a pastor in St. Paul

- A man who lives in communal religious housing and hasn't heard about the case

- A divorced man who works in wholesale produce managing drivers and warehouse staff

- A man who is a well-educated 3M engineer

- An older man who has experience working on helicopters and is a sailing enthusiast

- A man who works as a mechanical engineer on one of the Twin Cities stadium projects

- A young man who works at an airport restaurant and is expecting his first child in November

- A man who is a retired former National Guard member

- A young mom with two kids at home

- A woman who handles bookkeeping for a small family business

- A woman who spends her winters in Florida

TREVINO TAKING NOTES

During jury selection Wednesday, Jeffery Trevino appeared very much engaged, scribbling notes into a white legal notebook and consulting with his attorney.

The trial is expected to last up to three weeks and it's possible 55 witnesses could be called to testify because prosecutors are facing a lot of pressure in what has shaped up to be a largely circumstantial case against Jeffery Trevino.

THE MURDER

Trevino is accused of murdering his 30-year-old wife, Kira, in late February inside the rental home the couple shared with a roommate in St. Paul. Her body was missing until May 8, when a mechanic working on a barge noticed what he thought was a human shoulder in debris floating in the Mississippi River near downtown St. Paul.
