NEW YORK (AP) - The general election campaign for New York City mayor is just starting, and a poll shows Democrat Bill de Blasio has a sizeable lead over Republican Joe Lhota.

According to results of an NBC 4 New York/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll first published on The Wall Street Journal website Tuesday, 65 percent of likely voters gave their support to de Blasio, while 22 percent picked Lhota.

De Blasio is the city's public advocate. Lhota is the former chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and a former deputy mayor.

The poll of 930 registered voters, with 632 likely voters, was conducted Sunday and Monday. The margin of error for likely voters is plus or minus 3.9 percentage points.

The general election is Nov. 5
