Deliberations resume in Muscogee County suit

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) - Jurors in a federal gender discrimination case against Muscogee County Sheriff John Darr and the city of Columbus will resume deliberations Monday.

The jury of 7 men and five women deliberated for four hours Friday before getting the weekend off. U.S. District Judge Clay Land told jurors to return at 9 a.m. Monday.

The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reported the lawsuit was brought by two current Muscogee County Sheriff's Office employees who were not promoted to captain in 2010. The two lieutenants, Donna Tompkins and Joan Wynn, contend a lesser qualified man was promoted to captain in violation of their civil rights.

Their attorney, Edward Buckley, told the jury in closing arguments that the sheriff prefers to work with men. Darr and his command staff testified the man had more experience.
