McNair honored by Atlanta Dream

It was a special day for students and staff at the center of a gun scare last month. They were part of a brave response when a gunman walked into the McNair Discovery Learning Academy.

The McNair Community Emphasized team spirit in the wake of their school trauma and Sunday, they were together to be honored by another team. Principal Brian Bolden led teachers and staff for courtside recognition by the Atlanta Dream at Philips Arena.

The WNBA basketball team honored them as exceptional educators and heroes. The crowd in the stands included parents and children of McNair Discovery Learning Academy.

Three weeks ago, a man with a history of mental illness walking into the DeKalb County school with a semi-automatic rifle and several rounds of ammunition. But a McNair bookkeeper convinced him to give up. Teachers and other staff members got all the students safety.

The Atlanta Dream kept the game interesting for them closing a big gap and keeping the score close before eventually falling to the Phoenix Mercury 79-71.

But students say it was a good game and well deserved break before they return to school on Monday.
