Bloomberg: de Blasio running ‘racist’ campaign

Posted: Updated:

Mayor Michael Bloomberg says Democrat Bill de Blasio, who is the front-runner vying to replace him as mayor, is running a "racist" campaign.

Bloomberg, in an interview with New York Magazine coming out on newsstands Monday, says de Blasio is using his family to gain support. De Blasio is white, his wife is black and the couple has a 16-year-old son, Dante.

de Blasio is not only leading Democratic candidates in the polls, but he is polling very well among blacks since he began airing television ads featuring his interracial family.

Bloomberg in the article says, “I think it's pretty obvious to anyone watching what he's been doing. I do not think he himself is racist. It's comparable to me pointing out I'm Jewish in attracting the Jewish vote. You tailor messages to your audiences and address issues you think your audience cares about. … Tearing people apart with this 'two cities' thing doesn't make any sense to me."

On Saturday, de Blasio replied to the mayor’s comments.

“We proceed as a family together and it’s been an extremely positive experience for us, so, all I can say is, I hope the mayor can reconsider what he said. I hope he realizes it was in appropriate and I think the people of this city are ready for us to move forward together.”

de Blasio has also criticized Bloomberg as not doing enough for the poor.

Bloomberg also said that the New York Times was right in their editorials on picking Republican candidate and former MTA Chairman Joe Lhota and Democratic candidate and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn in the mayoral primaries.
