Fashion Week: brand recognition

The Fashion Week shows just started at Lincoln Center. There's a lot of buzz and excitement. The top designers in the world spend millions of dollars to be here, but we were wondering if it's worth it and if runway trends dictate real-life fashion.

So we went to Women's Wear Daily to find out.

James Fallon, editor of WWD, said that Fashion Week is a huge marketing tool and helps promote brand recognition. He said that translates into sales of a whole host of lower-priced products under the designers' name, like perfume and makeup, and that runways don't dictate the styles like they used to.

Fashion trends can now just as easily bubble up from the streets, fashion blogs, and even Instagram posts -- but women clearly are paying attention.

Fallon said one of the biggest changes is in what women buy. It used to be mostly clothes but now about 65 to 75 percent of this multibillion dollar industry is sales of shoes and bags.

    The third law enforcement officer injured in a Manhattan shootout is out of the hospital. The NYPD says Detective Mario Muniz was left Bellevue Hospital shortly after noon on Wednesday. Hundreds of his fellow police officers cheered as Muniz left the hospital in a wheelchair pushed by his NYPD patrol partner, Joseph Trovato.

Police Commissioner William Bratton has said the detective's protective vest may have saved his life.
