DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

A boil water advisory was put into effect in the Clairmont Road area late Thursday as crew continue to work to repair a broken water main.

According to a press release issued by DeKalb County spokesperson Burke Brennan, the area affected is bound on the north by Plaster Road, to the east by I-85, to the south by Briarwood and to the west by Buford Highway.

Brennan said in a statement, "In an abundance of caution for our citizens and to protect the public from any potential health hazards, citizens in the affected area are advised to boil all water prior to use for drinking, cooking or preparing baby food. The water should be boiled for at least one minute after reaching a rolling boil.  Residents in the affected area should continue to boil water until notified by DeKalb County that the water system has been restored to full operation and the microbiological quality of the water in the affected area is safe for human use."

Most of a 1.5  stretch of Clairmont Road, from Clairmont Way to I-85, remained closed to drivers in Brookhaven on Thursday due to the ongoing repairs to the ruptured water main in the area.

The 30-inch main burst along Clairmont Road, near Barone Avenue, just before noon Wednesday. It sent thousands of gallons of water gushing onto Clairmont Road. A good deal of the water still covered various parts of the roadway, pooling in certain areas.

Brennan said that before the water main could be fixed, crews had to shut off numerous valves interconnected through a series of feeder pipes.

As of noon Thursday, water service is still shut off to about 300 nearby homes and businesses.

One lane of northbound traffic was opened just after 5:15 p.m., but delays are expected to continue.

SKYFOX Traffic's Katie Beasley advises drivers to use the following alternate routes:

- Frontage Road to Briarwood Road
- Shallowford Road to Dresden Drive
- North Druid Hills to Buford Highway
- Frontage Road to Century Boulevard
