NEW YORK (AP) - A new poll shows New York City Democratic mayoral hopeful Bill de Blasio surging past the 40% threshold that would avoid a runoff election.

The Quinnipiac University poll shows de Blasio, the public advocate, as the choice of 43% of likely Democratic voters.

This is the first time any poll this year has a candidate eclipsing 40%. If no one does, the top two finishers in the Sept. 10 primary advance to an Oct. 1 runoff.

Ex-comptroller Bill Thompson is second at 20%. He's followed by City Council Speaker Christine Quinn at 18.

If there's a runoff, the poll indicates that de Blasio handily defeats Thompson or Quinn.

The poll surveyed 750 likely Democratic primary voters. The margin of error is 3.6%age points.
