Houston Community College is working with drilling companies to create a new program that will train people to work on an increasing number of oil rigs that are in place or in development. They expect they'll need to hire 24,000 employees in the coming years.
The industry says it needs about 24,000 "roustabouts" to be ready in the coming years. They are entry level jobs that pay up to $70,000 for about six months of hard work a year.
Construction will start soon on a facility at HCC's northeast campus. The "Rig One Experience" program will immerse students in an intensive two week course that simulates the environment they might work in on a rig.
The facility is expected to be ready for students by the Spring semester with enrollment coming in the next few months. For more information visit: www.hccs.edu/drillcenter
