Time to gear up for Komen Houston Race for the Cure

Posted: Updated:

Houston, are you ready to lace up your running shoes and help a fantastic cause? It's time to start raising awareness, and of course funds, for Komen Houston Race for the Cure.

Komen just kicked-off this race year in style at Marathon Oil Tower. It was a fitting place to get things going, since Marathon has been a huge supporter and is again sponsoring the event, for the ninth year. We met with the new President and CEO of Marathon Oil, Lee Tillman. He's a huge supporter of Komen, since his own mother is a breast cancer survivor and has fought off the disease the past twenty years. He's thrilled that she's about to celebrate her 80th birthday. His announcement of that made the crowd, mostly donning various shades of pink, go wild with cheers and applause. He event pointed out his pink tie and shirt, in support of the organization.

We also spoke with the Chair of the event. She's perfect for the role, since she is a breast cancer survivor herself, plus also works at Marathon. "Everyone can get involved, because everyone knows someone who has been touched by breast cancer. 75% of what you donate stays right here in Houston to help women with mammograms, education, and treatment," states Carmela Ledet. The rest of the funds go toward national research to help find a cure.

This is more important than ever, since more than 15,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer in Texas this year. To make matters even worse, more than 2,600 people will die from the devastating disease in the Lone Star State, alone.

Komen's ultimate goal is to help find a cure. The goal for the Houston race is four million dollars! It's always one of the leading groups of highest fundraisers across the world!

The race is Saturday, Oct. 5 in downtown Houston.
