LAKEWOOD, N.J. (AP) -- The Democrat running for governor took her campaign to a homeless encampment near the Jersey shore.

Sen. Barbara Buono visited Lakewood's tent city on Thursday afternoon. She spent more than an hour talking with residents of the encampment, which is located in the woods off Route 9.

"I will not forget you," she told them.

Buono spokesman David Turner said the tour is to highlight the stories of people who have fallen through the cracks and how Gov. Chris Christie has ignored them during his first term.

Residents of the encampment in the woods have agreed with government officials on a plan to close down the camp after its 80 residents find homes.

The April agreement ended a seven-year dispute between people living in about 100 tents and Lakewood's government.

New occupants have been prohibited from setting up camp since the pact was signed. Only three people have so far found alternate house, the camp's spokesman said.
