Regents uphold revocation of UGA art prof's tenure

Posted: Updated:

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - The Georgia university system's Board of Regents has upheld the revocation of an art professor's tenure.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports UGA administrators determined in May that nationally known painter James Barsness had violated the school's harassment policy by having sex in a public place with a student under his supervision.

Documents obtained by the newspaper through an open records request show a faculty panel determined Barsness had violated the non-discrimination and anti-harassment policy. But the panel was divided on whether he violated other policies and whether he should lose tenure.

The committee report concluded the sex was consensual but that both parties were under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

Then-university President Michael Adams decided Barsness should lose tenure. The Regents on Wednesday upheld Adams' decision.
