BURNSVILLE, Minn. (KMSP) -

Most motorists in the metro area found themselves in bumper-to-bumper, stop-and-go traffic for most of the weekend as drivers were detoured around several construction projects.

Frustration was certainly running high as crews with the Minnesota Department of Transportation closed some major highways in hopes of completing repairs in time for the Monday morning commute.

Southbound Interstate 35W was closed at Highway 13 in Burnsville, backing up traffic in the region and leaving those returning from weekends up north with a mess of alternate routes to navigate.

"You just kiss the summer good-bye because you spend so much time in the car," Christina Dawson told FOX 9. "It's sad."

Dawson admitted she's run out of patience when it comes to the construction hear her family's south metro home.

"Friday, we got out of a movie at 11 p.m. and had a traffic jam on my way home," she said. "It literally took us 25 minutes to get from 35W to my house, which is less than 3 minutes away."

Dawson certainly isn't the only one dealing with the driving doldrums. Crews spent the weekend paving and reconditioning several bridges in the area, and with nearby Highway 169 south also under heavy construction, people living in Burnsville and Savage felt trapped in the traffic -- particularly at access points for Highway 13.

"Unfortunately, there's not much we can do," MnDOT spokesman Kent Barnard said. "We got to do these jobs."

Barnard explained that the department's hands are tied, but he did acknowledge that this was an especially difficult weekend across the metro.

"People don't like to be delayed or inconvenienced, especially on the weekend when they are trying to get out of town," he said. "Unfortunately, it is a good time for us to get work done because there is less traffic."

There were many major road closures for motorists to contend with, including several along Interstate 694 in the north metro and Highway 169 northbound near Maple Grove and Golden Valley. Highway 36 was also closed in the east metro.
