Floodwaters continue to create problems in Forsyth County

Posted: Updated:
FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. -

Problems with floodwaters continued Friday in Forsyth County, two days after a deluge of rain in the area.

Denise and Gary Carnes say they've not been able to live in their Forsyth County home since Wednesday. That's when water rose from a small lake during heavy rain. It has still not fully receded.

They say five other houses have been hit by water damage.

"We can't have any running water right now. We have no air conditioning. All of our units are destroyed from the water," said Denise Carnes. "We need some help. We need to get this problem fixed so that we can live."

Residents say flooding in the area has been a problem for years, but all of the recent rain has brought the trouble to a new level.

The lake near the homes was filled in the 1950s to provide flood control.

Late Friday afternoon, the executive director of the Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Commission said it appears the homes were placed in the lake's flood pool. He says the dam and spillway are working properly in slowly releasing excess water.

The Carnes say their home was built about 25 years ago -- long before recent construction in the area created dramatically higher levels of water runoff.

"Times have changed. There's just more construction going on. Lots of runoff. There's nowhere for it to go but right here," said Gary Carnes.

A Forsyth County government spokeswoman said the county has no authority over the lake, but would try to get assistance for the affected residents.

The director of the Soil and Water Conservation Commission says there are more than 350 flood control lakes across Georgia.
