Tuesday's hail storm is taking a toll on a lot of pocket books, and many people are looking for cost-cutting solutions. Plenty of videos on YouTube claim dry ice can do the trick, so FOX 9 put it to the test.

Dry ice can do a lot of cool things. It can turn Halloween drinks into monster cocktails and set the stage for a spooky scene, but many online videos claim it can also be used to fix hail damage.

As expensive as it can be to fix all those dimples, dings and windows, FOX 9 decided to test the theory.

"It's just solid carbon dioxide," explained Tom Hanson, with Shamrock group.

The -110-degree temperature is supposed to make the metal constrict and remove the dent.

"Some body shops come in and buy it and do it, but a lot of regular Joes do," Hanson told FOX 9 News. "If you can pull out $2,000 worth of hail for $12, $12 is a pretty good investment."

Plenty of demonstrations on YouTube show a variety of dry-ice methods, with the most common called "painless dent removal."

"We've had that on there for about 7 minutes and I don't see a big difference," FOX 9's Bill Keller observed.

After trying the method in intervals of 5 to 45 minutes, it appears to be more of an urban legend than a do-it-yourself fix.

If cost-cutting comfort isn't available to those impacted by the storm, at least misery has company. The storm made a busy morning for insurance agents, claims adjusters and auto repair shops alike.

"The phones have been ringing off the hook. Lots of broken glass," Steve Griffin, of Safelite Auto Glass, told FOX 9 News. "We brought in personnel from other shops, other areas of the Twin Cities, to come in and give us a hand with it."
