Breastfed Babies Have High IQs, Study Says

Posted: Updated:

A new study shows the longer and more exclusively an infant is breastfed, the higher the score on an IQ test several years later.  Now doctors in Houston are doing more and more to keep women from giving up so soon.

At Texas Children's Pavilion For Women, doctors focus on especially providing support for mom during the first couple weeks after delivery.

"We have a high rate of women who initiate breastfeeding her, almost 86%, but by six months of age those rates are cut in half," said Dr. Nancy Hurst, director of women's support services.

Dr. Hurst says the number one reason moms stop is they don't think their babies are getting enough to eat.

"So, it's providing them with the information to be able to evaluate and to have the confidence they'll produce enough for their babies," she said.
