Families call on Cuomo to sign autism coverage bill

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Michael and Alison Giangregorio's 12-year-old son, Nicky, has autism. He needs a type of therapy called applied behavior analysis, commonly referred to as ABA.

Dr. Manny Alvarez, senior managing health editor at Fox News, says that ABA is critical therapy for autistic children. His son has autism. He says early intervention is key with children.

Two years ago, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a bill that families thought would require insurance companies to pay for ABA therapy. But there was a glitch in the bill that prevented coverage. As a result, families have to pay as much as $80,000 a year out of pocket.

The state Legislature has amended the bill to require insurance companies to cover ABA therapy. The bill is Cuomo's desk awaiting his signature.
