Habitat for Humanity Northwest Harris County is celebrating the completion of two new homes. Volunteers worked for months to give families they never knew before a decent place to live.
Katherine Garrett lost her mom at 16, the same year she got pregnant. Today she's a single mom of three boys with a full time job who put in well over the required sweat equity to build her four bedroom house.
"I had always said I wanted to buy a house, but I didn't want to get stuck in a home I couldn't afford to keep. This is my boys' home. I'm doing this for them," Garrett said.
Habitat homeowners work to build, then get their homes at cost with a 30 year interest free mortgage.
"Families work very hard, and then they have to pay a mortgage. When they pay the mortgage they know it's going toward another family's home being built," said Karly Grilliot with Habitat.
