LaGrange native killed by bomb in Afghanistan

LAGRANGE, Ga. -

A young soldier who grew up in LaGrange has been killed in Afghanistan along with two other Americans

Stefan Smith, 23, was one of three U.S. soldiers killed by an insurgent bomber in Afghanistan on Tuesday.

The Army soldier was the father of three young children.

Smith was a wrestling standout and 2008 graduate of LaGrange High School. His wrestling coach, Scooter Weathers, recalled his love of the sport and his determination to join the military.

"The thing I told all the wrestlers in the first meeting every year: ‘I want you to be a great man, a great husband and a great father one day.' And Stefan was all three and he was a great soldier," said Weathers.

Weathers said that Smith was scheduled to return to the United States on September 10.

The coach says two other former wrestlers from LaGrange High are currently in Afghanistan. He keeps them in his prayers as he mourns the loss of Stefan Smith.

"He's going to be remembered as a hero always here and, you know, we're going to miss him," Smith said.

Officials say three other American soldiers were injured in the Afghanistan bombing. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.
