Homicide charges possible for Alzheimer's center

Commerce -

It's possible that homicide charges could be added to the long list of offenses faced by the owner and employees of Alzheimer's Care of Commerce, FOX 5 Atlanta has learned.

This update comes about three weeks after the Georgia Bureau of Investigation descended on the care facility in Commerce. On the morning of July 2, authorities executed a search warrant resulting from a three-month investigation into the facility that stemmed from allegations of abuse and neglect of Alzheimer's patients staying at the facility.

Some claims allege restraining patients with bedsheets and doubling up on diapers to limit numbers of changes needed.

The owner of the facility, Donna Wright, is also being charged with cruelty to a person 65 years of age or older; and abuse, neglect, financial exploitation and failure to report under the protection of disabled adults and elderly persons

Recently, the Athens Banner Herald reported that the GBI has filed affidavits indicating homicide charges may be filed in the deaths of three patients at the facility. Those deaths were initially attributed to strokes.

But, the allegations are that those patients died from overdoses after being over-medicated.

The GBI affidavits quote one employee who said "meds were given out to keep residents asleep so employees wouldn't have to deal with them."

The owner and 20 current or former employees are already facing a combined 72 charges, including abuse and neglect.
