How often do you hear something like this...The Harris County Attorney has filed a lawsuit against this entire city block in southwest Houston.
That city block is located at 9600 Bissonnet. County Attorney Vince Ryan has targeted those businesses and property owners claiming they have long been a haven for crime in the Westwood area.
He says, "they profit from the criminal activity and we're gonna stop that profit and at the same time we're gonna make it a safe place for people to live."
Investigators say in 2 years there have been more than 1000 calls to the police in the strip center. Some of the specific businesses named in the lawsuit? Cubes which is an after hours night spot. Ryan says there have been two murders there in a matter of months.
Also and most shocking on the list is Burger King. According to this lawsuit filed against the corporation and the franchisee the location at 9651 Bissonet has become a haven for crime. Ryan says the main offense has been prostitution.
"Crime has occurred there. It's clear prostitutes go there they have a beverage or something to eat while they wait for clients to come to them so it's a well known spot," says Ryan.
Ryan may be right about that. We saw a young lady walking outside the fast food restaurant who identified herself to me as a prostitute. We also spoke with Shawn Stemar who has lived in the Bissonnet area for four years. He was not shocked by the County Attorney's claims that prostitutes allegedly work out this specific Burger King.
Stemar says, "this is it right here you're on the block you see them every night every Friday and Saturday."
Stemar also says some of the girls may have a double life going. He claims and named those who actually work at that Burger King and then work the streets.
Stemar says, "they serve burgers...(Isiah) That's kind of hard to believe.(Stemar) They serve burgers in fact one takes your order. Yeah, it's crazy."
Ryan says, "we think they know exactly what's going on but because they probably get a lot of business at Burger King people paying cash and leaving tips."
We called the franchisee for this Burger King on Bissonnet as well as the corporate office and so far we have not received a response.
In the meantime, Ryan is moving forward with his suit that he hopes will cleanup this section of Bissonnet once and for all.
