Head of NYC, upstate oxycodone ring sentenced

Posted: Updated:

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A 49-year-old Bronx man has been sentenced for running a ring that used forged prescriptions to illegally deal the painkiller oxycodone in New York City and the lower Hudson Valley.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says John Bland was given five years in prison at his sentencing Tuesday in Orange County Court. He pleaded guilty in June to one count each of attempted operating as a major trafficker and third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Prosecutors said members of the ring were paid from $150 to $400 for each prescription they got filled and Bland resold the pills for $10 each to other dealers in 2011 and early 2012. They said Bland sold more than 15,000 pills with a street value of $470,100.

Charges are pending against six other people accused of participating in the ring.
