West Nile virus detected in mosquitoes in NYC

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) -- The West Nile virus has been detected in mosquitoes in New York City for the first time this season.

The city health department says it was found in the insects in parts of Queens and Staten Island.

No human cases of the virus have been discovered to date.

The infected mosquitoes were found in the Pomonok section of Flushing, Queens, and the Huguenot Beach neighborhood of Staten Island.

The health department is setting up additional traps and applying larvicide to catch basins and other breeding grounds.

Protective measures against mosquitoes include eliminating standing water, using repellent, wearing long-sleeve shirts and long pants, and repairing doors and screens for tight fits.
