Investigators say fatal East Point fire accidental

East Point arson investigators say it appears that a candle was the cause of a fire that claimed one person's life early Tuesday.

A call about the fire first came in about 1 a.m., with East Point firefighters reaching the Gillem Drive home soon after. By then, though, the fire was fully involved.

Authorities say firefighters couldn't even enter the home because the flames so heavily engulfed it. Instead, they took a defensive posture from the outside.

Once firefighters wrestled the fire under control, the search and rescue effort inside of the home began. It was then that authorities discovered the body of a 34-year-old man.

Thus far, East Point fire investigators say they don't think anyone else was home when the fire started. However, authorities had not confirmed just who lived in the home as of 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Neighbors told Fox 5 Atlanta's Carolyn Ryan that the home belongs to the mother of the man found dead.

Investigators later determined that a candle ignited a sofa, and that the home had no smoke alarm.

Fire officials also have not confirmed the identity of the man found dead.
